By Linda Kor During the Nov. 12 Holbrook City Council meeting, City Manager Ted Soltis informed the council that the water leak on Eighth Avenue has evaded origin detection. He explained that COVID put a damper on that project as it took a long time to get the detection equipment then someone to come out and train on how to use the detection equipment. “We thought we found the leak but we have a map where the pipes are and the pipes aren’t always where they are supposed to be.” He noted it was believed that the location was found but when it was dug up there was no leak there. Soltis explained that a second effort was made but again, the leak was not able to be found. “The problem is that we’re not sure where the lines are. Our crews are going to have to go back to the methods they’ve used in the past, which is puddling. They’re going to have to puddle, see where the lines are and do some more detection. In the meantime, they’ve repaired the drain but just because the water’s not running down the road it’s still running under the ground.” He noted that Phase II of the remodeling of the city’s fitness center has begun. In Phase I the carpeting was removed under the matting and the matting was then put back. Phase II includes tiling the restrooms and the hallway by the restrooms. Soltis also stated that the public has a way to report city street lights that are not working, as those lights belong to Arizona Public Service. This can be done by going to www.aps.com/en/business/home. Click on “report an outage,” then “report a street outage or issue,” then follow the instructions. “So if you have a street light out, please go ahead and self-report,” stated Soltis. He also noted that crews are going to get to work on crack sealing the streets, nearly all the water meters in Sun Valley have been replaced with meter reads and the sidewalk in front of the Sheriff’s Office is also done. In comments by the council, Vice Mayor Francie Payne noted, “In the past 30 days we had 40 local COVID cases in just Holbrook and that’s pretty high for just one month’s time. I’d just like to remind everybody to be as careful as you can and look out for each other.”
