A 3-year-old California boy who had reportedly been abducted was rescued by a Navajo County sheriff’s deputy last week. At 10 a.m. on Friday, June 19, the deputy, who was on traffic detail, noticed a black Ford Crown Victoria with California plates exceeding the speed limit on Interstate 40 near milepost 290 just north of Holbrook. As the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle by using his lights and siren, the car accelerated to speeds up to 110 mph. The deputy continued to follow the car at a safe speed and saw it leave the intestate by driving through the median. The car broke down and smoke began billowing from the engine area. The deputy removed the suspect and the boy from the vehicle to protect them from any further danger. Upon investigating the incident, it was found that the child was taken from his mother in California and the suspect was being sought for custodial interference by authorities in that state. The boy was released to the Arizona Department of Child Safety. The suspect was identified as James Brandon Mashburn. He was arrested for child abuse, unlawful flight from a law enforcement officer, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving on a suspended license, and was booked into the Navajo County Jail. Authorities in California are seeking an arrest warrant for Mashburn to be extradited back to their jurisdiction.
