The Holbrook City Council convened on Thursday, March 24, with Facilities and Maintenance Director Tim Kelley addressing the council concerning the Holbrook Police Department’s roof, which is in need of repair. “Patching is not an option anymore. We need to reroof the entire roof,” stated Kelley, “New shingles all the way across. That would also include the fire station portion of the building.” The council approved Early Bird Roofing Solution LLC to replace the roof, which is over 40 years old and is missing shingles. City Manager Ted Soltis made a correction to the item, stating that the fiscal impact is not $58,536 as listed but actually $56,000.
During the call to the public, Holbrook High School Grad Night 2022 committee member Malissa Daniels spoke to the board regarding donations. “We hope to give out lots of cash prizes. We know that a lot of times these seniors get a going away gift for college but not everybody goes to college so they might not need that minifridge,” stated Daniels. She added that anyone can donate to these funds. To donate, contact Holbrook High School.
The council approved a special event liquor license application for Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church for an adult prom, which will be held from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. on April 30. “It will be $25 for singles and $40 for couples,” stated Melissa Olson, who is a part of the adult prom committee.
During the summary of current events, Councilman Adam Marsh reminded everyone that a community clean up event will be held April 23. “You don’t even have to wait until the 23rd of April to go out and pick up some trash.” He added that more information will be available in the upcoming weeks.
Soltis stated that the city was able to find a rough mower for the golf course for about $5,000 less than was originally estimated at $34,999, which the council approved the purchase of the previous meeting. Soltis also mentioned that McLaws Road is scheduled to have its road striped on March 31. “It was a bit of a delay because we were hoping to go in conjunction with another community to save some money, but just weren’t able to work that out.”
Soltis discussed the kiosks at the Hidden Cove Park has certain screws that tend to crack the framing. “I asked the manufacturer and they agreed to redesign the kiosks instead of countersunk screws they’re just flat top screws, so they can’t crack the frames again.”
Soltis also noted that the golf course driving range development has started with fill material being hauled in, adding that he thinks it will work out really well. He also discussed the new bleachers for Hunt Park have arrived and assembly has begun, and the Community Center remodel will be completed soon.
Soltis also stated that the Holbrook Library will be building a pavilion using a COVID-19 grant for outdoor activities but might struggle with the increased costs of materials.
Soltis ended his summary of current events by stating that the city does the best that it can and asking citizens of Holbrook to reach out to the city. “It’s really hard when we don’t know stuff that’s going on. So rather than going on Facebook and complaining about something, give us a call or ideally an email.” You can contact Holbrook City Hall at (928) 524-6225 or email them at holbrookcity@holbrookaz.gov.
