The Jan. 20 meeting of the Navajo County Community College District Governing Board began with the swearing in of returning board members James Matteson, Prescott Winslow and Daniel Peaches, followed by the election of officers. By unanimous vote, Ginny Handorf retained her position as chair of the board and Daniel Peaches remained as the secretary.

Betsyann Wilson, program director for Northland Pioneer College Friends and Family, reported that she is still seeking members for the organization’s board to represent Holbrook, Winslow and Kayenta. She also noted that she had recently been notified that Frontier Communications and Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center would be offering $30,000 scholarships for the nursing program. The scholarships would provide $1,000 for three years to 10 nursing students annually.

After a review and presentation to the board, the acceptance of the financial audit and single audit report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014, was approved. It was noted that the audit opinion for both reports was “unmodified,” which is good.

The board also approved the voluntary employee separation program, which would be made available to all employees who have been continuously employed at Northland Pioneer College for at least 15 years. Each employee who separates from the college under this plan will receive a separation payment of either 30 percent of his or her base salary or $20,000, whichever is higher.

In other business the board approved the list of external hearing officers for the college, and the organic gardening project agreements with the Navajo Department of Workforce Development and the Navajo-Hopi Land Commission Office, authorizing NPC President Dr. Jeanne Swarthout to act as signatory.
