This wooden nativity belonging to the Holbrook United Methodist Church. It was featured on a float in the Parade of Lights and now adorns the lawn of the church, as it has each Christmas for the past 75 years.
Traditions are important to every community and are most apparent during the holiday season with parades and festivals. Some traditions are not as apparent, but are no less meaningful. One of those traditions is the wooden nativity scene that each year takes a position of serenity on the grass lawn of the Holbrook United Methodist Church.
Each year for at least the past 75 years, the two-dimensional wooden figures have adorned the lawn, reminding passersby of the true meaning of Christmas but this year those who view the nativity may notice some subtle changes.
Three volunteers, who prefer not to be named, took it upon themselves to repaint the nativity for the very first time since it was originally built. The colors are now brighter and the expressions more peaceful, but the message remains the same and that is to honor the birth of Christ this holiday season.
Before being placed on the lawn Monday, the nativity was featured on the church’s float in the Parade of Lights last Saturday night. The entry received the parade’s Most Christmas Spirit Award.
