In an effort to bring the past and present into 2019, the volunteers at the Cedar Hills Senior Center spent many hours rearranging, reorganizing and cleaning the entire center with natural, environmentally friendly cleaners, creating a new spacious community room and warm, homey social area next to the dining room.

Within the meeting room, the Navajo and Apache County maps are again visible, with one on either side of the viewing screen, while in the social area a decorative rug now graces the floor with a large recliner, couch and arm chair available for visitors to relax and enjoy conversation.

The dining room is open for breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Friday, with Joanne Thompson cooking everything in house from the popular homemade southern-style biscuits topped with Snowflake Smokehouse’s mild sausage gravy, buttermilk buckwheat pancakes, eggs, bacon, omelets and breakfast burritos. Everything is served with a smile and a hot cup of coffee or chocolate.

Thompson said that folks have come all the way from Show Low just to eat the buckwheat pancakes because they can’t be found anywhere else in the White Mountains.

A free food rack is now at the left of the kitchen pass through window as a way for folks who need some extra food to take what they need, and for those who have extra to bring it to share.

One of the more critical changes was bringing back the use of all natural cleaners to make the center more environmentally friendly for all visitors including those of the Environmentally Ill (EI) community.

A free booklet is available from the volunteer team naming the ingredients used and explaining how to prepare the various cleaning products. Some of the natural cleaning ingredients include alcohol, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, borax, cornstarch, kosher salt, olive oil and tea tree oil.
