The Winslow Bulldogs fell to the Longhorns 13-11 in a non-regional baseball game played in Payson last Thursday, but bounced back on Saturday with a 33-0 win over the Valley Sanders Pirates.
Both Payson and Winslow came from behind to take late leads in that contest, but the Bulldogs failed to hold their advantage in the sixth inning after going ahead in the top of the sixth.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning and Payson took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second. The Longhorns went up 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bulldogs rallied in the top of the sixth for 10 runs and an 11-5 lead. Payson stormed back with an eight-run bottom of the sixth and held on for the win.
Johnny Woods worked the first 42/3 innings, giving up five runs, four of which were earned, on six hits and two walks. Chris Garrett worked just one-third of an inning and was touched for five runs on three hits and two walks. Matthew Smith took the loss in relief, working an inning and giving up three runs on three hits and a walk.
Smith led the Bulldogs at the plate with three hits in five trips, including a double. Vicenzio Sells was two for four with a pair of RBIs. Colton Corum and Jevon Estelle were each two for five. Garrett was one for four.
Saturday’s shut out of Valley Sanders 33-0 left the Bulldogs with a 3-3 record for the young season.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but really broke the game wide open in the bottom of the second with an incredible 22 runners crossing the plate. The game was decided at the point and it was just a matter of getting through the innings before the game could be ended by the mercy rule.
Sam Setalla worked the first three innings and got the victory, allowing just one hit to the Pirates. James Martinez pitched the final two innings and also allowed just one Pirate hit.
Vicenzio and Vittorio Sells led the Bulldog attack with three for three performances at the plate. Rhett Hardy was two for two. Woods was two for three. Martinez was one for one. Corum was three for five. Smith was two for four with a pair of home runs. Estelle was three for six. Chad LaPointe, Matt Cirre and Tommy Jones were each one for two. Adrian Montoya was one for three. Setalla was one for five.
The Bulldogs were slated to journey to Chinle on Tuesday and to Snowflake on Thursday, March 17, before entertaining Tuba City at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 18.
