By Annyssa Howerton During the Holbrook Unified School District board meeting held on Tuesday Oct. 5, Superintendent Dr. Robby Koerperich requested the board approve a change to the Arizona School Board Association (ASBA) bylaw. The bylaw change will add representation on the ASBA Board of Directors for Hispanic and Native American interests by adding a new seat on the ASBA Board of Directors. Currently, there is one seat on the ASBA Board of Directors designated for a representative of the HNAIC and it alternates every two years between Hispanic representation and Native American representation, creating gaps in representation. By contrast, the Black Alliance has a seat on the ASBA Board of Directors, ensuring representation on the board at all times. This proposed bylaw change also provides the flexibility for the HNAIC to split into two distinct groups if its members so choose and allows those groups to change their names and be recognized under the new names. The board passed the motion with Dr. Koerperich stating, “I’ll make it noted that you’re asking for a bylaw change. Which requires that two-thirds, two out of every three boards, not only put this on the agenda, but also pass it, which is a challenge, we’ve been down this road before. All we can do is our part, and advocate for other districts to do this as well.” Joel Daniels of Holbrook High School was awarded the Staples grand prize for the 2021 #thankateacher contest, in the amount of $5,000 in Staples gift cards for classroom supplies.
