Facing a Redskin squad down on its luck this season, the Roadrunners were hoping to come away from last Friday’s game with a rare win over St. Johns. Through the first eight minutes of the game it looked as if Holbrook would be able to pull off the upset, but the Birds’ good fortune and good play didn’t last throughout the duration of the contest. Holbrook eventually lost the game 38-14.
Wazuri Waits set Holbrook up with good field position, returning the opening kickoff to the 50 yard line. The Roadrunners’ offense stalled, but they were able to pin St. Johns back on its own two yard line with a good punt. Ty Foard picked up Holbrook’s first points of the game, tackling St. Johns for a safety to give Holbrook the 2-0 lead with 7:17 left in the opening frame. Wazuri Waits returned St. Johns’ ensuing punt 76 yards to pay dirt and just like that Holbrook led 8-0 and had all the momentum on its side. St. Johns trimmed the lead to one with a five-yard touchdown run, making the score 8-7.
After forcing Holbrook to go three and out on the next possession the Redskins took the lead for good, capping a five-play drive with a scoring run to push the lead to 15-8. With St. Johns leading 23-8 Cade Maestas broke free for a 45-yard scoring run for Holbrook’s final points of the night, but the Birds still trailed 23-14.
St. Johns scored once more in the second period and led 31-14 at the half.
The Holbrook squad played well early in the second half, forcing a turnover on downs inside its own 10 yard line. Unfortunately, the Roadrunners fumbled on the next play, setting up St. Johns with great field position at Holbrook’s 12 yard line. Two plays later St. Johns scored the final points of the night on a seven-yard run and led 38-14.
St. Johns then recovered an inadvertent onside kick and ran even more time off the clock. Needing to make a comeback, the Roadrunners really struggled on offense in the third period, running just four offensive plays in the entire quarter. Holbrook threatened in the fourth period, but a pair of interceptions turned away drives, leaving the Birds on the wrong side of the 38-14 final score.
Holbrook finished with just 181 total yards of offense, which won’t win many games. Maestas completed three of eight passes for 32 yards, but had three interceptions. Christian Pierce caught two of those passes for 27 yards and Scottie Gishie had one grab good for five yards. Maestas led the ground attack with 92 yards on 13 rushes with one touchdown. Wazuri Waits carried seven times for 26 yards. Gishie had four attempts for 12 yards, Danny Gonzales carried 5 times for 19 yards and Zakhari Waits had one rush for no yards.
Oscar Hernandez led Holbrook’s defense with 12 tackles. Foard finished with seven takedowns, including one for the safety.
The loss leaves Holbrook with a two-game skid, an overall mark of 3-5 and a matchup at fourth ranked Round Valley on this week’s schedule.
