The Roadrunners entered last week ranked number one in the 3A power points, but with their loss to Snowflake on Friday, they will enter this week ranked fourth following an easy win over Monument Valley on Saturday.

Playing in really poor weather conditions in Snowflake, the Bird scored once in the top of the first, but gave up four runs to the Lobos in the bottom of the inning and that was really all the Lobos needed. Holbrook trimmed the lead with another run in the second, but Snowflake countered with two more in the third. Neither team scored in the final four innings, leaving Holbrook with a 6-2 loss and third place in the East region behind Payson and Snowflake.

Holbrook managed 10 hits in the game. Tristan Baldonado went 3 for 4; Cade Maestas, 2 for 3; and Shane McGraw, Frankie Ulibarri and Gabe Gabaldon, 1 for 3.

Justin Perkins worked four innings on the hill, giving up six runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and walked just one. Jalen Nez and Maestas combined for two innings, allowing no runs on two hits with four strikeouts, all by Nez.

Having been knocked off the top spot on Friday didn’t have an impact on Saturday when Holbrook faced an overmatched Monument Valley team on the Roadrunner diamond.

Playing in much nicer weather Holbrook started slowly with single runs in each of the first three innings. The Mustangs scored twice in the top of the third to make the game close, but not for long. The Birds pushed across eight runs in the bottom of the fourth, then ended the game in the fifth with their 12th run, defeating the Mustangs 12-2.

Holbrook collected 15 hits in the game. Cole McDaniel was 3 for 3 with two doubles; Ryan Short, 1 for 1 with a double; Perkins, 3 for 4 with two doubles; Maestas, 2 for 4; Baldonado, 2 for 3; Gabaldon, 2 for 4; and McGraw and Michael Queiruga, 1 for 2.

Nez pitched four innings, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Ulibarri pitched the final inning with no runs and only one hit in the three batters he faced.

With the split Holbrook moved to 10-2 in regular season games. After hosting a struggling Winslow team on Tuesday, the Roadrunners will head to Goodyear to play in the three-day Wolves Classic on Thursday. That evening they will face Combs. On Friday they are scheduled to play Trevor Browne and Snowflake. Saturday’s schedule will be determined by pool play results from the first two days.

Next Tuesday, the Roadrunners play Blue Ridge at Lakeside. In their first meeting, the Birds defeated the Yellowjackets 1-0 in Holbrook.
