Baseball 3 Holbrook

The Roadrunners of Holbrook went 2-2 at the Estrella Foothills Wolves Classic held at the close of last week in Goodyear. They dropped their opening pool play game to Blue Ridge 10-8 on Thursday evening, but bounced back with Friday wins over Florence, 7-5, and the host team Estrella, 9-2. The Holbrook squad lost its first bracket game on Saturday morning, falling to Buckeye 7-6.

Prior to the tournament the Birds fell at Mingus in a regular season contest by a final of 8-1.

The Roadrunners entered this week ranked 13th in power points, but face the toughest week of their season thus far. They only have four teams on their schedule ranked inside the top 30 in power points and three of those are their next three opponents. After hosting 19th ranked Winslow today (April 13), they will travel to play at sixth ranked Snowflake on Friday, April 15. On Tuesday, April 19, they host No. 16 Payson.

With just six games left in the regular season, this stretch of games could go a long way in determining the Roadrunners’ final seeding for the state tournament, which begins on Friday, April 29. With 32 of the total 63 Division III teams qualifying for the post-season, they are already in prime position to make the tournament. Wins in their next three games could move them into the top 10 in the overall rankings and allow them to face a lower seeded team in the opening round.
