By Greg Perkins Holbrook entered the Division III State Basketball Tournament as the 12th overall seed and was slated to host Poston Butte Tuesday night. If the Roadrunners are able to get past the visiting Broncos, they will face No. 5 Mingus in the second round on Friday, Feb. 19, at a site yet to be determined. If they win two games, they could possibly meet up with fourth seeded Winslow next week, if both squads win in the first two rounds. The Roadrunners played in the sectional tournament last Wednesday in Chinle, where they took on Tuba City. The fourth seeded Birds fell to the fifth seeded warriors by a final of 65-61. Holbrook started quickly behind four three-point shots from Abrian Dickson in the first, pacing the Birds to a 17-16 lead. The second quarter belonged to the Warriors. They held the Roadrunners to just five points, all by Dickson, and led 31-22 at the half. Nathan Johnson picked up Holbrook’s scoring in the third period with nine, and Benson Davis connected on two treys. The Roadrunners netted 21 in the period, but Tuba also played well, pouring in 20 to keep the lead at 51-43. In the final eight minutes the Birds hit four additional three-point shots, two coming from Rhett Desiderio, but they couldn’t quite close the gap, losing the game by four points. Dickson led all players with 27 points. Johnson added 11, Davis and Desiderio each made three treys for 9 apiece. Brandon Kester added 3 and Miireux Begaii finished with 2 in the loss. Holbrook made 13 three-point shots in the game and went four for five at the free throw line. Tuba City was led by Davean Begay with 21. Joey Mathies added 17 and Urijah Yazzie had 11. The Warriors made four three-point shots and went 13 for 17 at the line.
