The Holbrook boys drew a split in last weekend’s games, winning at Show Low on Friday, then falling at home to Chinle on Saturday.

Friday night’s game against the Cougars saw the Roadrunners start slowly, with field goals from Marlin Martin and Marcel Young giving them just four points in the first period. Holbrook’s defense got the job done, though, holding the Cougars to only 21 first half points. The Birds rallied in the second to lead by two at the break.

In the third the Roadrunners extended their lead behind eight more points from Young. The teams scored evenly in the final period, giving Holbrook the 58-49 road win.

Abrian Dickson led the Birds in scoring with 18 points. Young added 17; Sylas Chevarillo, 12; Martin, 7; and Marcos Clark and Nathan Johnson, 2 each. Holbrook made six three-point shots and went 10 for 17 at the line.

Hosting the Wildcats on Saturday, the Roadrunners again started slowly, but this time they were never quite able to dig out of the hole. Chinle led 14-5 after the first quarter and extended that lead to double digits at the half. In the third a pair of three-point shots from Dickson and another from Young helped the Birds trim the lead to seven at the beginning of the final period. Six points was as close as the Birds could get down the stretch before dropping just their sixth game of the year by a final of 51-40.

Dickson again led Holbrook in scoring with 14 points. Young added 12; Chevarillo, 8; and Martin, 6. The Birds made seven three-point shots, three by Dickson, and went to the line only six times, making three of those.

After hosting Winslow on Tuesday, the Roadrunners, now 19-6, will host Tuba City on Thursday, Jan. 29, then travel to Valley Sanders on Saturday, Jan. 31. On Tuesday, Feb. 3, they welcome in Snowflake on Senior Night. They will close out the regular season on Friday, Feb. 5, with a road trip to Whiteriver to face off with Alchesay.
