Bea Darbe of Holbrook has authored three poetry books in the past few years and has now added something a little bit different with a children’s poetry book entitled “The Rhyming Tree.” Darbe not only wrote the kid-relatable poetry, she illustrated each poem in a black outline drawing that allows for kids to add their own creativity with the option to color the pages.

When asked what inspired the idea, Darbe explained, “I was talking to some teachers and they asked me if I would consider writing children’s books. So I thought, why not?”

The book, which took almost a year to write, is geared towards kids in third grade and older, with topics that cover a wide range of childhood experiences from the dreaded time out and the fun of dancing on dad’s feet, to dogs that talk.

Darbe is hoping to go to the schools and read the poetry to students, looking to inspire kids’ own creativity and share how poetry can evoke a memory or a shared experience.

Darbe’s other three books are based on the more adult themes of facing tragedies and the life experiences of friends and family put into words that they themselves couldn’t find. “Words have power. A lot of people have empathy and my empathy is very strong. When people talk to me I can actually feel what they’re saying and how they want to put it into words.

“People ask me, ‘can I tell you a story and you put it into a poem.’ They sit with me and after I have the book published, they are amazed that it was exactly how they felt.” Those words, according to Darbe, have helped people find closure for their experiences as they realize they aren’t the only ones that struggle.

“I always say, you’re not alone because you can find yourself in here,” said Darbe pointing to her books.
