The Homolovi Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society will meet at 7 o’clock tonight (Nov. 9) at the Winslow Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center (historic Lorenzo Hubbell Trading Post), located at 523 W. Second St. in Winslow. Speaker Abraham Arnett will discuss Ancestral Puebloan Settlement and Land Use Patterns in the Hay Hollow Valley. Archaeologists know that, over time, settlement patterns and land use of the ancestral Puebloans changed in the Hay Hollow Valley east of Snowflake, but the commonly held notion is that these were small groups of independent and autonomous farmers living in the rural backwater of the Southwest. Abraham will present research that indicates that, contrary to this idea, the people living in the Hay Hollow Valley faced climate and population change with interdependence and adaptability, including the creation of complex systems of community, ingenious technological advances for water flow and highly increased agricultural production. Two outstanding examples of this are Broken K Pueblo and Carter Ranch Pueblo. You can also join members and the speaker for a no-host dinner at 5 o’clock tonight at La Posada’s Turquoise Room. All regular chapter meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at the visitor center.
