Winslow golfer David Aberle is close to qualifying to play in the Arizona State 3A Golf Tournament after a respectable performance at the Safford Invitational on Saturday. The Winslow golf team will not qualify to play as a team, and Aberle is the only individual with a real chance to qualify.

Coach Ted Pate said that other players have improved considerably since the season started, but that they have a long ways to go. Winslow does not have a golf course, which, undoubtedly, makes progress difficult for the young players who also never have the advantage of playing on a course with which they are more familiar than their opponents.

Aberle finished 21st among the nearly 90 participants. He shot a 37 for the nine-hole part of the event and an 86 for the round of 18 holes, giving him a total score of 123 for the tournament. Winslow was 14th as a team in a field of 17.

Kyle Jones of Snowflake won the individual match with a low total of 101. He shot a 32 for the nine-hole event and a 59 for the 18 holes. Second was John Goswitz of Desert Christian with a total score of 104, just three more than Jones.

Desert Christian won the event as a team with a score of 459. Snowflake was second at 473. Winslow’s team score was 651.

Brandon Little had the second best round of any Winslow golfer with a 166, 71st among the participants. Kassy Grabowski was 74th with a score of 176. Josh Vargas was 75th with a score of 190. Lane Conner was 76th with a score of 194.
