As the result of an energy audit, the Town of Snowflake received a $70,000 grant from the Arizona Department of Commerce Energy Office in conjunction with the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program to implement energy efficiency measures.

The first step of utilizing this grant will be a project that will retrofit T-12 fluorescent lighting to T-8 fluorescent light, replace inefficient HVAC systems, and upgrade the water and wastewater pumping systems.

This project should give the town an energy savings of 35 percent or $31 for every set of four lights.

Town Engineer Rob Emmett explained that the first project going to bid will address the retrofit or conversion of 392 fluorescent light fixtures in town facilities.

The one bid that was received was opened on April 6 and was from Gexpro Electric Supply of Lakeside in the amount of $10,362.72, plus tax.

Town staff will install the lights and will be reimbursed by the grant, so Emmett requested council approval of $12,400 to complete the project in-house.

Emmett noted that there will be a rebate from Arizona Public Service Co. on this project that will go to the Town.

At their April 13 meeting, council members unanimously approved the project up to $12,400 to cover the bid amount, taxes and contingency for retrofitting fluorescent lights in town buildings.

In other business, the council awarded a $6,479.08 contract for crack sealant to Crafco Inc.

Emmett explained that it is important to prevent water from saturating the aggregate base and sub-base materials, so as cracks appear they should be filled with a suitable filler material that will seal the pavement surface and prevent water migration. The town will purchase approximately 11,520 pounds of hot applied crack sealant, which will do approximately 10 miles of road.

One other bid was received from Superior Supply Inc. in the amount of $6,701.45.
