By Naomi Hatch Navajo County Assessor Cammy Darris is concerned that property owners may be anticipating a reduction in property taxes due to the reduction in property valuation and this may not be the case, so she made a presentation on the valuation process at the Feb. 10 Snowflake School District Governing Board. Darris explained the process, telling the board that the tax dollars stay the same even when the valuation is down because of the budgets of entities that get a portion of those tax dollars, such as school districts, fire districts, the health districts, cities and towns. You can go online to the Navajo County website at www.navajocountyaz.gov and go to the Assessor’s Office page for this information. If you have questions, you can call the assessor’s office at (928) 524-4086 or e-mail Darris at assessor@navajocontyaz.gov. Navajo County Superintendent of Schools Linda Morrow also attended the meeting. She thanked the governing board members for their service. She is a Snowflake High School graduate, former teacher of board member Cory Johnson and was a student of Cory’s dad, Dee. Navajo County Victim Advocate Jaquel Moody informed the board of a poster and video contest that will be held in conjunction with Victim Rights Week in April. She asked that students be encouraged to participate in the contest, which will offer trophies and cash prizes. The Broadcasting Class made a presentation, which included a video to request approval for out-of-state travel to Burbank, Calif., March 2-5 to tour Warner Brothers Studio, Universal Studio, NBC Studio, Sony Studio, LA Film School and LA Recording Studio. The students felt this would help them with their career in journalism and broadcasting. The trip will cost $4,043.30, which they have already earned, and the Northern Arizona Vocational Institute of Technology (NAVIT) will pay travel expenses. The board unanimously approved the request. In other action Feb. 10, the board: * Approved several student activity fundraisers. * Approved open enrollment for three students. * Approved the 2011-12 district calendar. * Approved a request for an intergovernmental agreement between the district and NAVIT. The agreement provides joint technological education courses at satellite locations in the district to operate under a satellite model with the satellite continuing to provide the instruction and facilities for such courses. The agreement is for a five-year period, to be reviewed annually. * Following an executive session, renewed Superintendent Hollis Merrell’s contract for three years.
