By Linda Kor The Snowflake Unified School District Governing Board met last week and announced that school will start on Aug. 17 for all students. Teachers and most other employees will start on Aug. 5. Students will have a choice between online and in-person options once school begins. “We anticipate spending around $128,000 for additional site licenses. Students will be able to change options one time during the school year at the end or start of a new quarter,” stated Superintendent Hollis Merrill. He noted that depending upon the numbers, the district may need to hire to fill one or two new positions to manage the online learning students. The board moved to approve a $22.3 million expenditure budget, which includes nearly $17 million in the Maintenance and Operations Fund, an increase of 3.2 percent over last year; $2.4 million in the Unrestricted Capital Fund, an increase of 1.2 percent over last year; and $2.9 million in federal projects other than impact aid. It was noted that there will be a one percent increase in teacher’s salaries. As an example, an average salary of all teachers employed in FY 2020 was $50,987 and that in 2021, that would bring an increase to $51,631. In other business, the board: * Approved the employment of Taegun West as a Snowflake High School paraprofessional. * Approved the resignations of Thea Hudson and Janet Hall. * Approved the FY 2021-2022 district calendar. * Approval a payroll adjustment.
