Join the fun and help support some good causes by taking part in the annual Quiz Nite. The event, presented by the Painted Desert Kiwanis Club, brings together various teams from throughout the region for an enjoyable, community-building, fundraising event.

Here’s how it works: the event will be held on Friday, March 1, and begins with a nice, sit-down dinner at 5:30 p.m. (doors open at 5 p.m.) at Hulet Elementary School in Holbrook, followed by a trivia competition involving teams consisting of six members competing against each other for prizes and glory! There are six categories of questions (unknown ahead of time) and six questions per category. The MC reads each question after which teammates confer to determine their team’s answer. Following each round, score sheets are collected and graded with results posted on a visible-to-all scoreboard. What fun it is to see team rankings change throughout the evening!

For an additional $12 per team, teams have the option of purchasing Spelligans (spelling insurance, since spelling counts) and for another $12 per team they may double down in a category they think may be their strongest. Correct answers in that category are doubled. There’s even a costume competition for those teams who wish to add to the evening’s spirit by dressing up!

At evening’s end, prizes are awarded with the top three teams winning cash prizes of $600, $300 and $150 respectively and all remaining teams receiving prizes varying from six gift certificates to local restaurants to six packages of toilet paper. Every team goes home a winner!

Proceeds from the evening are divided equally with half of the monies raised going to the Holbrook Unified School District for extra-budgetary classroom projects and the other half going to a charity of the winning team’s choice. For all six years of the event, the winning teams have chosen the Bread of Life Mission as the recipient of half of the funds.

Event sponsors include the Holbrook Unified School District, Northland Pioneer College, Thrivent Financial and the Flagstaff Medical Center Foundation. The Kiwanis Club, recruiting significant outside help, organizes and runs the event, which is a major undertaking.

The cost to register a team is $150 ($25 per player) with checks payable to the Painted Desert Kiwanis Club and delivered to Quiz Nite Coordinator, Jeff Johnson.
