Arizona GOHS Director Alberto Gutier provided the signed contract for purchase of the vehicle in early January. The purpose of the funding is to better equip the police department to conduct enforcement of Arizona’s traffic laws, particularly the laws relating to impaired driving. Last year, nearly 25,000 motorists were arrested for DUI in Arizona. Nearly 200 people died in alcohol-related crashes in the State and over 45,000 were injured.

In addition to funding granted for the vehicle purchase, the department received $6,000 designated for overtime costs associated with DUI saturation patrols and task force operations as well as an additional $4,000 in STEP (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) overtime funds from the GOHS. Together, these specialized overtime details provide vigorous enforcement of aggressive driving, red light running, impaired driving and other forms of risky driving behavior which come at high costs in terms of money, criminal and human consequences.
