Snowflake High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) had its annual Greenhand Initiation at the monthly chapter meeting on Oct. 9.
The Greenhand initiation, which consists of each new member having a hand dyed green with food coloring, is the traditional way of welcoming new FFA members into the club. This year the Snowflake FFA welcomed 33 Greenhands to their chapter.
During the meeting, the annual Chapter FFA Creed Speaking contest and Chapter FFA Information contest, which are open only to Greenhands, were also held with three contestants in each contest.
The contestants in the Creed Speaking contest are required to recite the FFA creed and are evaluated by three judges for accuracy, clarity and answers to questions, from the judges, about the creed. Freshman Laney Wilhelm was the winner of that competition.
The FFA Information contest tests the knowledge of contestants about the FFA organization and was won by freshman Jessalynn Isaacs.
Snowflake FFA currently has 73 members. The Snowflake Chapter can trace its beginnings to the 1930s, while the National FFA organization was established in 1927 in Kansas City, Mo.
Jack Babb, an adult sponsor for the chapter said, “The FFA mission focuses on three components: premier leadership, personal growth and career success; while providing agricultural instruction to students in a continual growing field that has gone beyond the track and plow and now includes various sciences and technology.”
