Snowflake Welcome Sign

Four members of the Snowflake Council retained their seats after the council unanimously approved a resolution adopting the issuance of certificates of election to Mayor Lynn Johnson and councilmen Greg Brimhall, Cory Johnson and Hunter Lewis, as a result of the final count of the votes for the Aug. 28 elections at the meeting on Sept. 4.

The election for mayor was a race between Johnson and Tom Poscharsky for a four-year term. Johnson won by twice the votes with 808 to Poscharsky’s 404 votes and there was one write-in vote.

The election to fill two council seats for four-year terms was uncontested with incumbents Brimhall receiving 981 votes and Johnson receiving 902 votes. Twenty-five votes went to write-in candidates.

Incumbent councilman Lewis was uncontested in his bid for a two-year term council position, receiving 1,118 votes with 21 votes going to write-in candidates.

Town Clerk Katie Mesler said, “The only office that was contested was the mayor’s. Approving the resolution will count as canvassing the vote.”

The council also approved an agreement between the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office and the towns of Snowflake and Taylor regarding Byrne Grant funding for Fiscal Year 2018-19. The County manages the grant, which provides additional funding to the cities and towns for the Major Crimes Apprehension Team (MCAT). The Snowflake-Taylor Police Department will receive approximately $38,000 from the grant to help fund one detective position that will be assigned to the MCAT.

In other business, the council:

* Proclaimed Sept. 12-15 as Navajo County Fair Days.
