The communities of Snowflake and Taylor recently came together to make sure that local veterans in need get basic hygiene items. On Saturday, July 14, more than 30 volunteers met at the Snowflake American Legion Post No. 126 to assemble hygiene kits for homeless veterans. The American Legion headed up the effort with help from Black Diamond Auto Glass, Arizona Public Service and many community members.

The kits were needed for the upcoming White Mountain Stand Down event organized by Fishers of Men. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Show Low National Guard Armory, located at 3600 E. Deuce of Clubs in Show Low. The event will be providing services such as a hot meal, health services, job services, veteran’s benefits help, pet supplies, clothes, haircuts and hygiene kits to any U.S military veterans that are in need. Proof of military service is required.

Organizers estimated it would need 200 hygiene kits assembled for the event and the community went to work. All of the supplies for the kits were donated and volunteers were able to assemble a total of 260 hygiene kits. Volunteer and U.S. Army veteran, Walt Blackman said, “It is great to see our community join forces to help veterans. This is another example of how we, as a community, lean on each other.”

Volunteer Millinda Click said, “I am so proud of our community. I am so humbled by the donations that were provided, the volunteers that showed up. Words cannot express the emotion I felt seeing all the helping hands.”
