Peggy Butler

Peggy Jean Butler, 89, returned home to her Heavenly Father in the early morning hours of Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, at Owens Livingston Mortuary, 320 N. Ninth St. in Show Low. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Show Low Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1401 W. Deuce of Clubs, with a viewing one hour prior. Burial will follow at the Show Low Cemetery. She was born July 20, 1928, in Burly, Idaho, the 11th of 12 children, to Leroy and Mauretta Eager Pace. Eight of her brothers served in the military during World War II at the same time. Only one was killed. Her brother Ned’s P-16 was shot down in China. She was raised in Claysprings and attended grade school in the old two-room school. She attended high school in Snowflake, where she dated and fell in love with Hal Butler. When he returned from overseas, they were married in Show Low at the home of Hal’s parents, Julius Ray and Dicy May Butler. Hal and Peggy lived in Show Low all of their married life. Peggy loved being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and always had children at her home. She was very active in public affairs, always supporting her husband. She spent many hours helping to establish a hospital in Show Low. Her efforts were realized when the Goldwater Hospital was built, which is now Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center. She was active in the LDS church and supported her children in all of their activities. She loved the Relief Society where she enjoyed quilting, a talent she has displayed over the years, as she has made many quilts for all her friends and relatives. She was an active member in the Order of the Eastern Star. She was always gracious and friendly to anyone she met, and was always willing to give a helping hand. She was a great cook and you never went to her home that she wouldn’t give you something to eat or drink. She always made you feel special and comfortable in her presence. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Mauretta; nine brothers, Lynn, Loren, Devere, Don, Carl, Gerald, Victor, Ned and Denny; two sisters, Leola and Joan; and a grandchild, Austin. She is survived by her husband, Hal; her three sons, Gary (Gail), Greg (Denise) and David (Jean); 13 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, Peggy’s family would appreciate donations to the local Hospice Compassus.
