Contracts were awarded by the Snowflake Unified School District Governing Board earlier this month for the replacement of the roof at Snowflake Junior High School.
Several months ago, Business Manager Mark Ollerton applied for a grant to repair the roof. “We felt there were some eminent hazards,” Ollerton explained.
The grant was approved and a company was hired to do the structural design of the roofing system. The design is similar to what is in place throughout the district, Ollerton noted.
Two things have to happen to complete the project, Ollerton said.
The first is to get the roof off and see if there is asbestos that must be abated. D&K Enterprises was the low bidder at $27,450, followed by Spray Systems at $34,373, with five other companies bidding much higher.
The next step is to hire a company to do the work. Progressive Roofing was low bidder at $144,725 and JBS Roofing bid $196,221.
“The State of Arizona recommends a vendor on a process like this,” said Ollerton, so the district hired Wrecourp, which presented a recommendation to hire Progressive to replace the roof, but also asked Ollerton to contact Progressive to verify that it will complete the project, including Amendment No. 1, for the price listed.
Ollerton noted that there was an amendment of approximately $600 to purchase wood that they discovered would be needed during the walk through.
Darren Perkins of the district’s Facilities Management Department explained that there were old abandoned swamp coolers and lines, and the holes in the roof required by them need to be covered.
Ollerton said that the project will be completed by April, but they would like to have it completed by Dec. 1, and would start mobilizing the week before Thanksgiving.
In a special meeting held Nov. 19, a motion to approve D&K Enterprises as the abatement contractor and Progressive Roofing as the roofing contractor passed unanimously, with board member Shea Flake declaring a conflict of interest.
