The Snowflake Town Council approved a request by Dixie Amberson for a variance Oct. 27.

Planning Director Dale Call explained that Amberson’s home was constructed long before the town code was in place, and is 5’ from the property line. She is building a 12’x26’ addition and asked that it be allowed to line up with the existing residence, which would make it a 5’ side yard setback instead of the required 10’. The rear setback would maintain the 30’ minimum rear yard requirements.

The property is zoned R-10 (Residential 10,000), as are the surrounding three properties. Call noted that Amberson’s property is typical of other properties in that area.

The Planning and Zoning Commission met Oct. 6 and voted 4-0 to recommend approval of the variance. Call noted that at the meeting there was no one present in favor of or opposing the request.

“I have 20 grandkids and 30 greats, and I have company, so I need the extra room,” Amberson told the council.

A motion to approve a variance request to construct a room that will encroach the side yard setbacks was approved unanimously by the council.

Silver Creek Senior Citizens Center Board President Cindy Schreiber, Director Loretta Wittlow and Nanette Lemons, who job shares with Wittlow, were also in attendance at the meeting.

Schreiber thanked the council for the town’s recent donation of a van, noting, “It’s getting lots and lots of use.”

Also attending was Tina Meckstroth, who Schreiber introduced as “a volunteer who doesn’t think anything of doing 40 hours of volunteering.” Schreiber is also a volunteer who puts in many hours on behalf of the senior center.

Schreiber invited council members to help serve a Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, Nov. 19, at the center, noting last year they served 122 plates. Schreiber will also invite the Taylor Council members to serve, and noted that Navajo County Supervisor Jason Whiting will be serving the gravy.

If you are interested in a delicious Thanksgiving lunch, please make reservations at the center by calling 536-2222.
