Reigning as Snowflake High School’s 2015 Prom royalty were King Jay McRitchie and Queen Kirsten Prestwich, seniors in the self-contained special education class.
“I didn’t expect to be queen. I was surprised,” said Queen Kirsten, whose goal is to walk at graduation.
“I think it was awesome; it excited me a lot,” said King Jay McRitchie.
“I think it is a selfless act for junior/senior students to nominate and vote for two special needs students to give them the opportunity to feel special and beautiful,” said Cindy Peterson, the school district’s director of Student Services.
Roxie Roes, self-contained classroom teacher, declared the week of April 27 to May 1 Prom Week so the king and queen could wear their crowns and sashes around campus.
“They both have been in a self- contained setting until last year when they got to go out and take some other classes,” said Roes. “There is still some bullying, but these magnificent kids at Snowflake High School are doing a lot of accepting.”
After graduation this month, Jay will be going to Holbrook to work at the First Step Workshop and Kirsten will work at the Reeve’s Foundation in Snowflake.
