The Arizona Department of Transportation began a project in May to replace the existing bridge at Five Mile Draw on State Route 77 approximately six miles north of Snowflake. Half of the current three-span concrete slab bridge has been replaced and traffic has now been diverted onto the newly constructed section. The last section of the old bridge will be demolished during the first week of December and then the project will be stopped for the winter. Construction on the $3.2 million project, which is expected to be completed in summer 2015, will continue this spring when weather conditions are more favorable for bridge construction. The narrow traffic lanes through the construction zone will require the continued reduction in the speed limit through the winter months.
