A total of 1,324 early and provisional ballots cast in Navajo County for the Nov. 4 General Election, the majority of them provisional, still remained to be counted by midday last Friday, leaving the results of at least one local race in question. Complete results were expected by Monday.

According to the unofficial results, Terril Kay and Cory Johnson were elected to the Snowflake Town Council with 720 and 665 votes, respectively. Daniel Erwin Prestwich drew 621 votes and Byron Lewis, 459.

Jason Whiting received 1,011 votes for the position of Snowflake mayor, but withdrew his candidacy prior to the election when he was appointed as the District III representative on the Navajo County Board of Supervisors. The council will appoint the next mayor.

Charles Foote led the race for two four-year seats on the Snowflake Unified School District Governing Board with 1,239 votes, followed by Carole “Nellie” Owens with 1,231; Beverlee Kay, 1,229; and Amy Johnson, 591. Terry Stratton received 1,173 votes, but had withdrawn his candidacy because his wife is employed by the school district.

Cory Johnson was the only candidate vying for the two-year term on the school board and was thus deemed elected, so his name was not on the ballot.

Snowflake School District Superintendent Hollis Merrell said last Friday that a decision on whether a recount would be required would be made when all votes have been tallied.

Taylor residents approved the gas franchise 818 to 123.

Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Fred Peterson was re-elected with 4,169 votes and Precinct 3 Constable Dave Wood was re-elected with 4,186 votes.

Republican Sylvia Allen of Snowflake won the District 6 State Senate seat, defeating Tom O’Halleran of Sedona, 27,374 votes to 25,328.

District 6 State Representatives Brenda Barton (R-Payson) and Bob Thorpe (R-Flagstaff) retained their seats. Barton received 28,500 votes; Thorpe, 28,293; and Lanny Morrison, a Flagstaff Democrat, 22,807.
