A contract to begin repair on the Woodruff Bridge was awarded to J. Banicki Construction of Phoenix during last week’s meeting of the Navajo County Board of Supervisors.
“The contract includes repair and the removal of existing asphalt,” Assistant Public Works Director Bill Bess explained. “Over the years, the old deck has fallen and exposed the rebar. We put an asphalt patch on it, but now we are doing the repairs to put in a new deck.”
Only one bid was received, according to Bess, although seven contractors requested plans for the project. “The estimate of their work is $118,000. The engineer’s estimate was $177,000, so we feel like we got a good bid on it,” said Bess.
The bridge is located on the west side of Woodruff and will be closed to public use for approximately two to three weeks, “blocking access to the residents of Woodruff from the west side. Country Road or the Old Woodruff Road will be their primary access to the north, to the highway. We will make sure that we provide higher maintenance on those roads during that time so that they may have the smoothest ride possible,” Bess noted.
Repairs to the bridge are slated to begin as soon as possible, with public notice occurring first.
Contracts were also awarded to local businesses Brimhall Sand, Rock and Building Materials, Perkins Cinders, Inc. and Hatch Construction. These are annually renewed contracts for supply of aggregate for cover materials used in countywide road repairs and other projects. The public works budget for fiscal year 2017-18 includes funding for maintenance materials.
