At 8:26 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, a vehicle vs pedestrian collision occurred on Buffalo Street in Holbrook. The vehicle involved was a gray Pontiac sedan driven by Sabrina Yellowhair, 52, of Holbrook.
According to the report, Corporal Sanchez arrived at Holbrook Police Department, located at 120 E. Buffalo St., and upon entering the authorized personnel parking area found Yellowhair sitting in her vehicle in the parking lot. At that time Officer Williams also arrived and Yellowhair was asked why she was in the secured parking area and she made incoherent comments but according to the officer “appeared calm and collected.” The officer told Yellowhair to move her vehicle to the public parking area and come into the office.
Yellowhair backed out of the parking lot and pulled into a public parking space, then when Corporal Sanchez came outside from the lobby, she immediately backed out and traveled at a high rate of speed eastbound on Buffalo Street.
At Second Street, Yellowhair veered from the road onto the sidewalk and struck a pedestrian identified as Matthew Denny, 60, of Albuquerque, N.M. It was observed by Corporal Sanchez that Denny was flung above the nearby fenceline by the impact, which was more than 7’ high, before landing on the ground. Yellowhair continued east on Buffalo Street before jumping the curb again and moving west on Buffalo Street. She again veered towards another pedestrian on the sidewalk who ran out of the way to avoid being struck. By then officers Williams and Sanchez were in their vehicles and cornered Yellowhair’s vehicle to prevent it from moving any further. Yellowhair was arrested at the scene.
Officer Williams moved to assist Denny who way lying in the street and had stopped breathing. The officer was able to use CPR to resuscitate him until Holbrook EMS arrived although he remained unconscious. Denny was transported then flown to Flagstaff Medical Center. Belia Higgins, 37, of Holbrook, who was walking with Denny also sustained minor injuries when her foot was run over by Yellowhair’s vehicle.
Once in custody, Yellowhair reportedly told officers she purposely went after Denny and Higgins because they were skinwalkers intent on harming the officers.
Yellowhair was arrested for possession of dangerous drugs and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and booked into the Navajo County Jail.
As the scene was being investigated another individual, Danielle Mitchell, 34, of Holbrook, who said she was a relative of Denny, crossed into the crime scene after being told by officers to stop. Mitchell was arrested for interfering with judicial proceedings and booked into the county jail.
Denny’s condition remains unknown as of press time.
