City of Winslow

By L. Parsons The City of Winslow is looking forward to a busy, fun filled summer. With COVID-19 restrictions lessening statewide, leaders are confident in their ability to present safe family friendly events. Vice Mayor Samantha Crisp mentioned the Farmer’s Market that takes place each Saturday morning at the First Street Gazebo Park. “Vendors have been returning to the market,” she said during last week’s Winslow City Council meeting. “We have had more and more each week. The market is held on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. until noon and beginning in June, we will be holding an evening market as well.” Beginning June 2, the market will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. Through September, it will be open on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Also beginning this month, citizens are organizing a “Summer Night Saturdays” with events being held in various parks citywide. The first of these will be presented by Mayor Birdie Cano and the Winslow City Council. At 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, a free presentation of PeeWee’s Big Adventure will be shown in the Route 66 Plaza on Second Street. Cano said, “May 30 through June 5 is National Bike Week so I thought this would be a great film to share in honor of that.” All ages are welcomed at the movie and concessions will be offered for a fee at the Winslow Theater, located at 115 N. Kinsley Ave. The following weekend, on June 11 and 12, the City of Winslow will present free showings of family movies at the drive-in located at the multi-purpose field on Maple Street. The Winslow Friends of the Library and Action Medical Services are sponsoring the movies. The event will be a fundraiser in support of the Winslow Theater with donations accepted. The theater owners, Tommy and Debbie Martinez will be selling concessions. Tickets will be available through the City of Winslow Recreation Department beginning June 7 at the indoor pool, located at 500 E. Cherry Street. The Winslow City Library will be registering readers for their annual Summer Reading Program, “Tails and Tales” online at the library and online by following the library’s Facebook page. Due to pandemic restrictions, the library is still currently only offering curbside services but will be kicking off their summer programs this week. The schedule of events is available on the library’s Facebook page and includes story times on the library lawn and other all ages activities throughout the summer. On Friday, June 25, The Cherry Bombs, a volunteer fundraising group, will present a drag show in support of Pride Month. The show will be held at Tom’s Tavern, located at 1500 E. Third St., and will be a 21 and older event. The following day, Saturday, June 26, the group will host a parade and community barbeque at Vargas Field on Maple Street. Beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, the parade will wind around town with decorated vehicles. All who are interested are welcome to take part. Immediately after the parade, a picnic will take place with children’s games, a bounce house and water slide and more. The Winslow Unified School District has begun providing their free summer food program to all children under the age of 18. The program will run until July 23 and will offer hot food options available at Winslow Junior High School from 8 to 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Grab and go options will also be available at 11 stops throughout town and three stops on the Navajo Nation. Locations include the outdoor pool on Maple Street, Sacred Heart Park in the Southside neighborhood and Desert View Baptist Church, located at 101 Hipkoe Drive. A full list of locations is available on the WUSD Facebook page and at each school site. More summer activities will be announced each week as elected officials and community organizers build the schedule.
