Last week, the Winslow Unified School District Governing Board organized their board for 2019. Incumbent President Sharon Greenwood was again elected to serve the term. “I wouldn’t mind doing it another year,” said Greenwood when asked if she would accept the position.

The governing board also voted to go ahead with a project presented by Facilities Director, Charlie Hancock. Hancock proposed that the entry doors on all three elementary schools be upgraded and the Winslow High School gymnasium doors be made more secure. He explained, “The company, DH Pace, is one that we deal with a lot on door closures and locks. We had them come and walk through each school with us as far as looking for ways we can make each one better at keeping people out. The idea that we came up with is to lock the outside doors at each school and install a buzzer system. People will come to the door and be on speaker and on camera and have to be buzzed in during school hours.”

He let the board know that some of the doors will have to be replaced but that all are capable of being fitted with the system at the elementary school level. “It is nearly impossible at the high school and junior high because you have so many doors and so many kids and staff in and out of all of those doors once an hour every day. As far as the new gym, this company can secure it as well by replacing and upgrading the locks.”

Hancock recommended the board experiment with the system on one or two elementary schools before agreeing to have all three outfitted. The board voted to have Washington, Jefferson, Bonnie Brennan and the high school gymnasium completed simultaneously. Details on the contract amount were not available at press time.

Superintendent Cyndie Mattox was absent from the meeting, however, she had this to say in a statement read aloud by Greenwood, “I would like to thank Charlie Hancock and his crew for the way they handled our water pipe breakage over winter break. Mr. Hancock will be coming up with a winter vacation protocol and give each principal a map of where the shut off valves are at each site. We will be prepared if there is a next time.”
