The Winslow Unified School District Governing Board recognized certified employees Pam Van Arsdale and Carol Gilliam, and classified employees Karen Crain and Nathan Brady last week as employees of the months of October and November. The employees were presented with plaques by Superintendent Doug Watson.

The board also approved the hiring of Darcey McKee as part-time support forces assistant coach at Winslow High School and Chea Cavin as high needs special education aide at Washington School. Mark Keams was approved as a volunteer wrestling coach at Winslow Junior High School. The retirement and return to work of Robin Henry, secretary to the superintendent, was approved effective Feb. 2.

The board approved donations to Jefferson School of $110 for Sonic Night from the Arizona Restaurant Systems, and $1,000 to Washington School from a MacDonald’s Classroom Supply Awards grant.

A resolution was issued to comply with Government Accounting Standards Board requirements for reporting funds for various purposes.

A change of early release times for Jan. 25 was approved to make it possible for all school personnel who need to do so to receive four hours of training from Beyond Textbooks trainers.

Bonnie Brennan School Principal Troy McReynolds and Special Education Director Peggy Elrod gave reports on the kindergarten program and magnet school programs there.

McReynolds provided a handout which showed what students learn in kindergarten, and thanked the board for providing for all day kindergarten, which he says makes a big difference and which not all schools in the state have.

Elrod showed the many things that the magnet school does, including using various computer programs such as YouTube, Microsoft Office, Windows Movie Maker, Galileo and many others.

Both speakers said they were pleased with the programs and happy with the progress both the kindergarten and magnet school are making.
