Mayor Robin Boyd and the Winslow City Council last week proclaimed November as Native American Heritage Month. As read by Vice Mayor Harold Soehner, the proclamation notes, “The City of Winslow considers the preservation of Native American traditions and culture as one of the highest priorities for this community and for this entire region.”

President of the Tribe of Many Feathers Club at Winslow High School Nicolette Barton accepted the proclamation and spoke about the schedule of events planned for the month in celebration of Native American Heritage. “We will have the crowning of Miss and Mr. District Winslow Native American, with the pageant happening the sixth through the ninth, and the following week is going to be the dress up days, the fashion show and movie week.”

Barton said the Native American Festival would be held following the Thanksgiving recess, complete with dancers, stories and food. All events are open to the public and will take place in the Student Union at WHS, 600 E. Cherry St.

In other business Oct. 24, the council:

* Approved adoption of the 2017 Navajo County Hazard Mitigation Update.

This plan is required to be updated every five years, and according to Navajo County Emergency Management Director Mary Springer, “allows the City of Winslow to apply for grants,” from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The plan has been approved by the State of Arizona, as well as FEMA.

* Approved the payment for purchase and installation of a prefabricated restroom facility at Sacred Heart Park, located in Southside.

McCauley Construction of Winslow has been awarded the contract for the project, which will contain all stainless steel amenities enclosed in a concrete building. The company will also take on the plumbing and electrical work required by the project, and pour a new sidewalk from the building to the existing sidewalk. The cost of the project is $65,000.

* Approved the ratification of a $65,857 contract with Flynn Southwest LP for refurbishing the roof on the city council chambers, located at 115 E. Second St.

* Renewed the contract between the Lady Dawgs Softball Organization and the city.

The organization uses the city fields, and is responsible for maintenance and repair of the fields during its season. In return, the city provides facilities and lighting.

The next meeting of the council will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14, in the council chambers. The public is invited to attend.
