A Winslow man who shot and killed a 39-year-old father of two in 2020 has been sentenced to 25 years in prison, the maximum allowable sentence for second-degree murder. On April 11, Andre Miguel Coleman, 24, was sentenced in Navajo County Superior Court after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, a class 1 felony. The court assessed the sentence in calendar years, meaning Coleman must serve the entirety of his sentence and is not eligible for early release. According to court documents, on May 21, 2020, Coleman had approached a residence in Winslow where the victim was doing yard work, and, wearing a shirt over his face, shot twice at the man before fleeing on foot. The victim died on the scene. The evidence suggests there was not a relationship between Coleman and the victim. The Winslow Police Criminal Investigation Unit and the Navajo County Homicide Task Force investigated the shooting, and the Navajo County Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case. Coleman will serve concurrent sentences for one count of burglary and two counts of third-degree burglary for burglaries he committed in Holbrook in early 2021. The court granted credit for the time Coleman served in Navajo County Jail prior to sentencing, which totaled 561 days. “This was a senseless crime that left family and loved ones shattered. I hope the resolution of this case will provide a measure of comfort as they continue to heal,” said Navajo County Attorney Brad Carlyon. “We commend the tremendous work of Winslow police and task force investigators for their thorough efforts on this case.”
