City of Winslow 400×300 1

Last week District 1 Little League held their tournaments with the winners going on to compete in the state tournament. Winslow will be represented with two softball teams. The senior softball Winslow All-Stars received an automatic bid into the state tournament starting at 8 p.m., today (Wednesday), in Cottonwood taking on the winner from District 4.

Also joining the senior girls in Cottonwood were the 11U All-Stars. They played in a three-team double elimination with Flagstaff and Page. Winslow received a bye in the round and took on Page who defeated Flagstaff. The Winslow girls would have to take it to extra innings for a close win of 15-14.

Flagstaff faced Page to determine who would meet Winslow in the championship game, this time Flagstaff was victorious against Page. Flagstaff brought their 11-year-old team roster, three girls who were originally on the Major All-Stars, which fell to Page in their tournament.

The Flagstaff team was looking to force a game two but the Winslow girls were relentless and even though Winslow was down 5 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, they refused to give up and would get runners on base and hit them around.

They got within 3 runs when they got their second out. Down to their last out, the Winslow girls dug deep and scored 4 runs, winning the game on a 2-run RBI into center field for the game and championship, with a final score of Winslow 13 and Flagstaff 12. Their tournament will start at 8 p.m. this Friday, July 10, against a team not announced as of press time.
