The Winslow Friends of the Library are preparing to hold their 23rd annual book sale Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 19-21, in the Elks auditorium, located at 315 W. Third St. Thursday will be a preview for Friends of the Library members only beginning at 5 p.m., Friday is open to the public from noon until 7 p.m. and on Saturday, anyone may come beginning at 10 a.m. to fill a box for $3.
City Librarian Docia Blalock extended an invitation to the sale to the Winslow City Council and the public during the Sept. 26 council meeting. “This is an incredibly valuable effort to the community, because it not only puts books in the hands of community members, but clears books from the library staff room where they have been donated,” Blalock said. She also pointed out the purchases made with Friends of the Library funds throughout the years, including supplies for the library, improvements to the grounds and building, and entertainment for the public.
Blalock continued, “Over the last 15 years, the Friends of the Library have donated money raised from the book sale, money raised from the donations of cans, money raised from the in-library sales in the total amount of $43,233.” The Friends of the Library have also contributed to the refurbishing of the floor at the Elks Lodge as thanks for hosting the book sale and to the Winslow Homolovi Observatory toward the purchase of a telescope to further the Star Party program.
To contribute to the book sale, residents are asked to stop by the library, located at 420 W. Gilmore St., or take books to the book donation boxes provided at the city finance department, located at 119 E. First St.
