Winslow City Hall

Winslow City Manager Stephen Pauken’s employment contract was approved last month after the city council returned to regular session. Discussion of the new contract was held in executive session.

The council also adopted two ordinances.

The first adds a section to the city code regarding chickens, a topic of much previous debate. This ordinance establishes regulations regarding the keeping of chickens.

The second accepts the grant of real property from Maverik, Inc., which will be added to the right of way for North Road.

Pauken and his designees reported on recent city activities, Oliva Brasher, CPA, reported on the fiscal year audit, which was finished early and was as good as possible, the monthly finance report was given by Finance Director Elias Jouen and the quarterly code compliance report was given by Shane Chatwin.

During the call to the public, Marie LaMarr spoke, noting that the city should thank the woman who was instrumental in the Route 66 Association and the grants for which it was responsible.

Mary Heldt spoke favorably about the police department and the work it is doing.

The council also approved the consent calendar, including the check register, minutes of the Nov. 15 council meeting, awarding of a contract for Bales Ave. improvements to McCauley Construction Company for not to exceed $283,199.95, awarding a contract for Wastewater Treatment Plant rehabilitation phase 2, reappointing Bruce Lazzarini to the Airport Commission, and reappointing Michael Shumway to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

A Winslow fire fighter and a member of the Winslow Fire Fighters Association introduced Sparky the Fire Dog in costume. Sparky works to prevent fires and to teach adults and children what to do to survive a fire. He told the story of a young student who was honored for her actions to get her family to safety.
