The Winslow City Council went into executive session Tuesday for legal advice regarding the March 27 officer involved shooting.
No action was taken on the matter when the council returned to regular session, but there were indications that the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s investigation of the shooting incident will not be complete for more than a month.
During that executive session, the council also addressed a personnel matter regarding the city clerk employee agreement. Following the executive session, the council approved the city clerk’s contract.
The council also discussed subsidies and their impact on the budget. Several people from the senior center spoke about their needs. Some changes in the Meals on Wheels program make it likely that the program will become more costly and private donations may be necessary to keep it going.
City Manager Stephen Pauken reported on recent city activities, noting that there are no commission or board vacancies, and that a public meeting will be held May 12 at the Hubble Building for comments and information on the Winslow Levee project.
Judge B.J. Little gave the quarterly court report, and spoke about a program to help people with DUIs with their problems.
An ordinance amending the Winslow City Tax Code extending the one percent transaction privilege sales tax for an additional five-year period was adopted. The extension was approved in a recent election.
Four people spoke during the call to the public. One noted that the recycling program resulted in his having more in the recycle toter than in the garbage. Another spoke about a problem with Waste Management and a lack of a response from the city. Another spoke about streetlights being out, and the last about the lack of a review board for problems with matters such as with the police.
The council proclaimed April 10-16 as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. Three dispatchers were recognized and received the proclamation.
The consent calendar, including the check register and minutes of the March 22 council meeting, was approved.
The council met as the Winslow Housing Authority prior to its regular meeting. Two resolutions were adopted, approving the authority’s annual plan, and opening its choice voucher and low rent program waiting lists for a 90-day period beginning May 1.
Public Housing Director Jesse Fernandez gave a brief report, and board went into executive session for legal advice.
A gentleman who was a former resident spoke about electrical problems at the unit he was in which had caused a fire, and congratulated Fernandez for the job he was doing to correct problems.
