By L. Parsons The City of Winslow has a number of projects in the works for economic development and improvements to the city. Winslow City Manager John Barkley noted that one of those endeavors is a new business called C6 Zero, which is a recycling and materials company. “They are interested in re-developing a property in the Winslow Industrial Park. The several million-dollar renovations will feature a large-scale, rail-based recycling operation,” he noted. The company will take asphalt shingles and repurpose them for multiple uses including a high-quality oil, an engineered aggregate and even a clean fiberglass, while transporting the finished product via rail. The company intends to be up and running by the end of the calendar year. Barkley added, “This project has the potential to provide over 100 new jobs to the area.” In addition, other economic development projects are underway in Winslow. Renovations of older businesses as well as new construction will take place in the near future. Already near completion is the renovation of the Westerner Motel on Third Street and the rebuilding of Taxiway B at the Winslow Lindbergh Regional Airport. Barkley said, “The City of Winslow has recently approved the construction of a Unisource storage and office facility on the vacant lot at First and Berry streets. We are also working with a local land owner on a development project at Mike’s Pike Blvd. and Hipkoe Drive that will feature 17 new single-family residences. RT Rentals, a local Winslow company has been approved for construction of a new 10,000 square foot flooring and equipment rental facility at the North Road and I-40 Interchange.” Partnerships with established businesses and companies also looks to be on the horizon for Winslow. Barkley said, “S Power and Navajo County are working with us on logistics for the Chevlon Butte Windfarm. This project is in the works and will produce several hundred jobs across the region. It is approximately a year from the construction phase.” A family owned potato farm is also interested in utilizing Winslow’s location along the interstate. Barkley said, “The city is working with Walther Farms, a family owned potato farm with locations nationwide, on a residential hub in Winslow to provide short term housing and truck parking for farm truck drivers.” Finally, Barkley mentioned a proposed hotel development near the same area that will soon feature a recreational vehicle park, “That will serve as a natural extension of Winslow’s northern commercial area,” Barkley said. “It will feature a combination of RV extended camping amenities and permanent residences.” He continued, “A hotel development project is set to get underway at North Park Drive next to Maverik and will feature a hotel with potential for a restaurant and conference space. The developer has not yet indicated the brand of hotel.” Winslow also plans to begin a beautification campaign later this year as they plant over 50 trees throughout the city. Barkley concluded, “That is more trees than we have planted in the last five years combined. Further, we recently were awarded a $250,000 community development block grant for lighting improvements. The work is slated to begin this spring.”
