Last week, the Winslow City Council approved the naming of the multi-purpose fields located on Maple Street and the baseball field inside Sacred Heart Park on Washington Street.
The multi-purpose field, used for little league, co-ed softball and soccer will be named for Valentine “Val” Lopez Jr., a lifelong Winslow resident who was instrumental in the youth soccer and baseball programs in Winslow. Lopez’s family suggested the facility be named the Val Lopez Jr. Sports Complex in early 2018.
The baseball field at Sacred Heart Park in the southside neighborhood will be named for Phillip Sanchez, a 14-year-old Winslow youth who loved to play ball on the field. Phillip “Philly,” recently passed away from an unexpected illness. The ballpark will be called Philly’s Field.
“Should we approve the new ordinance that tells what the rules and regulations of renaming streets and facilities are before we approve renaming,” asked Councilwoman Judy Howell. Councilman Tom Chacon Sr. replied, “I think the resolution of No. 1774 (the ordinance outlining rules and regulations) will be for future naming of facilities.”
Despite discussion of the order of the agenda, both items passed with six to one votes, Howell entering the only vote against.
The council did pass an ordinance detailing the policy for naming future facilities and streets within city limits. The ordinance states that the mayor, at least three council members or the city manager may request the renaming of a facility or street.
The policy also explains the criteria for naming facilities for individuals. Living or deceased individuals for which streets or facilities will be named must have shown or currently show a dedication to involvement in community leadership in some capacity. The entire ordinance can be viewed on the city website, www.winslowaz.gov or by visiting City Hall, located at 21 N. Williamson Ave.
