Winslow High School was the host of this month’s Coffee with a Cop event. The monthly gathering serves as an opportunity for the public to get to know their police officers and have casual interaction with them.
Officer Marlita Jones, Detectives Joe Marquez and Alicia Marquez, Sergeant Quentin Hayes, Sergeant Ken Havlicek, Lieutenant Ken Arend, Crime Scene Investigator Doug Walton, School Resource Officer Afton Foster, Sergeant Jason Therman and outgoing interim chief Chris Vasquez enjoyed breakfast provided by the WHS Student Council and coffee from the Future Business Leaders of America club (FBLA).
According to business teacher Lisa Foster, FBLA serves coffee every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday through the school year to students and staff as a fundraiser for the club. The money raised goes toward travel expenses and competition fees as the group participates in multiple events throughout the state. These events pit high school students against each other in contests that illustrate their learned work skills, including interview techniques and resume writing.
In order to serve coffee, tea and juice drinks that are profitable, FBLA members contacted local business owners Jack and Leone Jue of Mojo’s Coffee. The Jues provide a proprietary blend of coffee and training for the student baristas. The kids then take these skills to their self-made coffee stand at WHS and bring in money for their club.
Foster explained, “They just decided that they wanted a coffee shop; this is all them!” They serve the brews with skill and great customer service that they will take into the workforce with them.
