Walter spent most of his life in Winslow where he attended school and graduated in 1954. While attending Winslow High School Walter was quite the athlete playing on the football, basketball and baseball teams as well as other various activities.
Soon after graduation he married the love of his life Patty Greer on Nov. 12, 1955. They had four children, Walter Jr., Cindy, Greg and Shelly. Eventually in 1989 his only grandchild Elizabeth York was born.
Patty and Walter operated Bus Mead Insurance Agency in Winslow for 24 years. After retiring in 1994 they enjoyed fishing and spending time at their cabin. Walter took pride being involved and helping out with his community. He was a member of the Elks Club and Kiwanis Club for a long time and also was a director for the annual Winslow parade for several years. In his later years he volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the food basket at the senior center. His God, family and friends meant everything to him. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his daughters, Cindy and Shelly; and granddaughter, Elizabeth and her husband William; his brother, Albert Greer; brother-in-law, Mike Mead and his wife Irene; sister-in-law, Coraleen and many nieces and nephews.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Eric Philemon and Madie Greer; sisters, Rebecca and Ella Jo; and brothers, Phil, Joseph “Bev”, Francis and Bill Greer; and brother-in-law Bill Mead; the love of his life, Patty; and beloved sons Walt Jr. and Greg.
