Winslow is the grand opening host community for the Arizona Humanities Council’s statewide tour of the Smithsonian exhibition, Journey Stories. The Old Trails Museum will host Journey Stories at its partner venue, La Posada Hotel, from June 22 through Aug. 4. Journey Stories explores the roles that migration, travel and modes of transportation have played in American society. The Old Trails Museum’s local programs and exhibit, Journeys to Winslow, will explore topics including the Santa Fe Railroad, Harvey Girls, US Route 66 and Winslow’s Charles Lindbergh-designed air-port. The Arizona Humanities Council is creating a postcard book that will be free to exhibition visitors. The book will contain three images from each of the six Journey Stories host communities in Arizona. The Old Trails Museum has selected one historic and one contemporary image for the Winslow postcards, but needs your help in choosing the third and final image. Vote for one of these images showing Harvey Girls who worked at Winslow’s second Harvey House. Entrepreneur Fred Harvey opened a series of eating houses along the Santa Fe Railroad that evolved into America’s first restaurant chain. Harvey established Winslow’s first Harvey House in 1887, and the first Harvey Girls arrived from the East and Midwest that same year. Like Harvey Girls all over the West, Winslow’s Harvey Girls often married local workingmen and settled down, and many of their descendants still reside in town.
