In a vote that included the opposition of Councilman Kyle Peck, the Town of Taylor council voted to accept a resolution assuming the maintenance of Airport Loop Road at the April 4 meeting.

Town Manager Gus Lundberg said, “What you have before you tonight is a resolution that states the town will assume the maintenance of Airport Loop Road, specifically between Pinedale Road and Airport Road.”

The town paved and paid for the construction of Airport Loop Road from Pinedale to Highway 77 several years ago. There was an easement deeded and dedicated to the town for public access in 2010.

Lundberg went on, “Just because somebody deeds public access, does not mean it is the town’s responsibility to maintain it. If you want the town to maintain a public access, then the access has to be brought up to a certain standard.”

Lundberg said that the town does not currently own the road or the business park through which it travels, but “we are in process of purchasing this property and we believe in the near future we will own it.”

The winter storms have left the road in “atrocious shape” according to Lundberg. The resolution gives authorization to begin much needed maintenance.

Mayor Dave Smith asked if the resolution and maintenance of the road would affect the flood control in any way, to which Lundberg said no.

Peck observed, “So the individual or entity that currently owns the road has not been maintaining it to a certain standard.” To which Lundberg agreed when he said they had not.

With no further discussion, the council voted to accept the responsibility of Airport Loop Road, with Smith, Vice Mayor Carl Cosper, Councilmen Shawn Palmer, Bill Baldwin and Fay Hatch voting for. Peck voted against and Councilman Jason Brubaker was absent.
