At approximately 1:50 p.m. on Monday, April 12, the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office was called regarding a fire behind the business of Wild Woods, LLC in Heber located off State Route 260. It was reported that the fire was spreading into the trees and fields behind the business. When the deputy arrived, Heber/Overgaard Fire was on the scene fighting the fire. Once the fire was manageable, a Navajo County Sheriff’s deputy, detective and fire investigator were able to investigate the cause of the fire. The results of the investigation revealed Daniel Elkins, 71, of Heber, was dumping hot ashes on dry pine needles. With the high winds throughout the day the fire quickly grew to a point where first responders were called to assist. The fire reached the yard of a residence nearby but they were able to contain the fire before it damaged any property. Elkins was cited for reckless burning. Sheriff David Clouse stated, “Fire season is upon us and we all need to pay special attention to the red flag warnings. Things are extremely dry out there and careless acts such as this can endanger others’ property and lives. Please pay attention, follow red flag warnings and please be fire wise.”
