The 19th annual Standin’ On The Corner Festival is slated on Sept. 29 and 30 in Winslow. The event draws crowds from all over the world to the town made famous by an Eagles song in 1972. The festival is held at Eagle Pavillion, a venue built with funds made during the festival and various fundraisers throughout the year. Eagle Pavillion is located at the corner of West Second Street and North Campbell Avenue. This year, doors open at 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday. Admission is $5, with children 12 and under admitted free.
“The 19th annual Standin’ On The Corner Festival is all about the music,” event master of ceremonies Tom McCauley said. The Standin’ On The Corner Foundation, of which McCauley is a member, has sought out musical acts in many genres. “This year includes nine bands, the most of any festival. We have covered all the roots music and included Celtic music for the first time,” McCauley added.
Friday’s entertainment begins at 3 p.m. and kicks off with country music from Silver Star Band, followed by the Josh Roy Band, classic rock from 74th Street Band, and rhythm and blues and soul by Outside the Line. Saturday’s festivities get started at 9 a.m. and feature stage shows from dance groups including High Desert Dance Academy. The day is packed with entertainment ranging from country music by The One, a band out of Flagstaff, to blues by Arizona Blues Hall of Famer Tommy Dukes, as well as the Knockabouts Celtic Band, and rock and roll by A Boy Named Sioux. Closing the night will be Eagles tribute band One of These Nights.
“The festival will have something for everyone, from the vendors to the kids’ games and bounce houses,” McCauley said. Many vendors participate in the festival. Food, crafts, souvenirs, jewelry and more will be available both days of the event. The kids’ area will include a miniature train ride and face painting. Some of the kids’ activities require an additional fee.
The festival also features a live auction lead by McCauley that is used as a fundraiser for the foundation and routinely offers donated items from local businesses for bid. The auction draws quite a crowd and begins at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Other activities include, a fire truck pull, horseshoe tournament and beer garden for those over the age of 21 with valid identification.
Sponsors of the festival are Banana Jon’s Portable Toilets, The City of Winslow, Maverik, Winslow Ford, Larson Waste, Heart and Skull Graphics, and the Winslow Chamber of Commerce. For more information, go online to www.standinonthecorner.com.
