The Town of Taylor had three letters of interest to fill the open seat on the Taylor Town Council at the Jan. 9 special meeting. Sherry Cosper, whose husband Carl Cosper had recently passed leaving the open seat on the council, was nominated and unanimously voted in to fill the seat on the council until the election in August. Cosper was nominated by Councilman Fay Hatch and sworn in at the meeting by Judge Fred Petersen. The other two letters of interest were received from Jack Babb and Kris Neff.
“I’ve lived in this community for 30 years and I feel strongly that we need to give back to the community what this community has given us and this community has given me a lot. Not only me, but my family, as well. I feel like it’s time for me to give back. I feel like it’s my time,” said Cosper.
At both the Snowflake Town Council meeting and Taylor Town Council meeting this week, Chief of Police Bobby Martin presented an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) between the towns of Taylor, Snowflake, Show Low and Northland Pioneer College (NPC) to use an existing tower at NPC to improve communication capabilities as part of the ongoing consolidation process with the Show Low Police Department’s dispatch. Both town councils have approved the IGA.
While at the meeting, Chief Martin gave a brief report on crime rates between 2018 and 2019. “There was an almost five percent decrease in total incidents taken in by the police department, which means about 500 less incidents last year. There was an eight percent drop in felony arrests, 2.6 percent drop in misdemeanor arrests, and 14.7 percent less citations issued.”
Martin did note that the most dangerous types of crimes such as homicides and sexual assault was up 4.86 percent, collisions rose 8.5 percent and traffic stops are up 3.3 percent.
